Update ...

I found out how to search other people's blogs. Success!

Now, to creepily stalk all the bloggers out there in an attempt to get some feedback on my post ....

Hi, I thought I would answer some of the questions you asked me on my blog, here, just in case you didn't know to come back to my blog to get my reply. I hope that doesn't sound condescending, but I remember that blogging was very confusing when I started, so I assume you are a little that way too (btw, I love the groveling).

Re. my header. I had a heck of a time getting someone to do one for me because most of the people who do them are SAH moms who have very little time to work on it. I finally found a local graphic designer and paid her to design my header for me.

Some tips I have that seem to work to increase readership are:

1)write a new post every day, if at all possible. That way you become a habit, and people are never disappointed -- there's always something new for them.

2. Readers love pictures. I've been blogging 14 mo. and didn't get good at putting pictures on my blog until about 5 mo. ago. Since then my readership has doubled from any average of 50 visits a day to an average of 100.

3. I lose interest in blogs that are just a journal of someone's day to day life -- not particularly fascinating to strangers! So, I try to write most of my posts in the same format as a story. A beginning a middle and an end. Hopefully, with a moral to the story, or a punch line or an unexpected twist at the end. Readers seem to LOVE true stories that are funny.

4. I reply to every comment I get. Not by e-mail, but as a comment of my own on that post. That way people get in the habit of coming back to that post, besides looking at my newest post, to see what my response was to their comment.

5. Visit lots of other blogs and leave interesting comments. Many of the "favorites" on my blog roll are blogs that I first visited because they had left an interesting comment either on my blog or on one I was reading.

No, I am not an "editor" -- but I am an "edit-er," who just enjoys the written word, and having an audience for MY written words.

Good luck with your blog. I found your comment on my blog interesting enough to take the time to come here and tell you some things I've learned, so that's a start!

Bottom line is -- if you write an interesting and original blog, people will find you.

Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting. It's probably the "neediest" comment I've every received! :) Comments are the paycheck for a blogger.

First of all, you're right. I have no idea how to get back to your post.

Is there a way to find it without A) Memorizing what you're blog is, or
B) Subscribing to your blog?

I tried to click on your name, but I guess that would be too easy.

I'd like to commend you on such an excellent post, but I'd rather do it on your blog than on mine. Many more people would appreciate your help.

Hey Josh--thanks for the comment on my blog--it's always nice to know someone's actually out there reading : ) I have to say that Sandra gives great advice and I can think of nothing to add to what she covers in her awesome comment here.
As far as being an "editor," I fell into this sort of work accidently; in the process of getting a history degree I ended up being a fairly decent writer. I started tutoring on campus (I attended EMU in Ypsilanti, MI) and gradually moved toward offering copy-editing and proof-reading services to both students and professors. I began by posting flyers on some of the college campuses in my area, but, with word of mouth, I get plenty of work now without even advertising. Most of what I do is editing research papers and journal articles, with a few sexier projects thrown in here and there--I edited an entry on architecture for an encyclopedia and I proofread a few English-langage Russian history text-books. Anyway. I wish you every success--drop me a line if I can be of any further help. Cheers!

Hi,

See how this works? I automatically came back to check to see if you had responded to my comment, and you had! Good work!

I guess clicking on my name didn't work because I hadn't entered my URL (blog address), I just used Google to post my comment. I'll put in my URL this time and then I THINK you WILL be able to click on my name and go to my blog.

Good luck!

Yep, your right! (Go figure.) I can now browse your blog content at my leisure.

Great stuff BTW.
